As people become older their lifestyle slows down to a more placid pace and subsequently the elderly become more sedentary. This has never been thought of as a problem, however, recent research into this area has found there is strong evidence stipulating that a loss of activity is directly related to individuals having falls and accidents.

This is explained by the decrease in muscle mass from inactivity causing degeneration in strength, stamina, posture, co-ordination and range of movement. All of these attributes aid people in pursuing their daily functions. This deterioration can be prevented, simply by using a controlled form of exercise under the supervision of a qualified trainer.

At Urban Personal Training we have a range of programs dedicated to elderly patrons over the age of 55. The program is run as a series of group classes and can therefore also become a social experience. Administering the classes in groups is also a wonderful method of getting a large number of people, up to 16 at a time, exercising for a minimal cost. The class concentrates on building core strength through repetition and minimal weight bearing movements.

It has been shown that weight bearing activity assists in the generation of bone mineral density which means stronger bones with less chance of injury.

Limiting injuries from accidents will not be the only positive outcome experienced. As the body becomes stronger the elderly may find they feel more agile, their metabolism will increase preventing further problems such as diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity, which can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease.
